Great for vacations or road trips
While multi-stop routing has been a feature in the Google Maps app for some time, it took a bit longer for Apple to add the feature to its own Maps app. Luckily, Apple introduced this option to iPhone users with iOS 16.
With multiple stops, you can plan a road trip with breaks to eat, get fuel, or go sightseeing, without losing the driving directions to your final destination. The next time you’re ready to head out on the highway with Apple Maps on iPhone, here’s how to add multiple stops to your trip.
Note: You must be running iOS 16 or later on your iPhone to use the feature.
Add Multiple Stops When Planning Your Trip
You can add stops to your route whether you’re leaving from your current location or planning to drive between two different spots. Open the Apple Maps app on your iPhone and follow these steps.
- Obtain directions as you normally would or one of these two ways:
- Enter a location in the Search bar and select the Directions button (car icon) to drive there from your current spot.
- Enter a location in the Search bar and select the Directions button. Then, tap My Location and enter a new starting point.
- When the initial Directions screen displays, be sure to choose Driving as your method of travel. Currently, you cannot add multiple stops in Apple Maps using other modes of transportation. You can also use the Now drop-down box to schedule the trip or Avoid to stay away from tolls and highways.
- Pick Add Stop.
- Use the Search box that appears to find your stop by doing one of the following:
- Enter a category such as Restaurants, Hotels, or Gas Stations and choose the “Search Nearby” option in the suggestions. Tap Add for the spot you want.
- Enter a specific business name or the street address. When found, it’s automatically added as a new stop.
- Add your next stop(s) the same way by choosing Add Stop and finding the location.
- By default, all stops you add are included at the end of the trip in the order you add them. This means that after you add stops along your route, you’ll need to arrange them in the order you want them. Select a stop on the route card and use the three lines on the right to drag it to the right place in the list.
- If you want to remove a stop, tap and hold it, then select Delete.
When you’re ready to head out, look at your options for the best route and select the Go button to get started. The directions take you to the first stop you added. Once you arrive, the directions guide you from that location to the next stop you added, and so on, until you reach your final destination.
Add Multiple Stops During Your Trip
While it can be simpler to add the places you want to stop before you begin navigating, you may need to stop somewhere unexpectedly along the way. For instance, you may discover you need gas for your car or a passenger must use the restroom.
- Swipe up from the bottom to expand the screen for the additional options for your trip.
- Select Add Stop.
- Use the Search box to find the location as described earlier.
- If you’re selecting from a list of nearby options, choose one and pick Add. If you enter a particular location or address, it’ll be added as a stop automatically.
- The stop you add then becomes the next stop in your navigation. You cannot rearrange the stops after you begin the route. You can then add another stop the same way if needed, just note it then becomes your next immediate stop.
- If you’d like to remove a stop from the trip, slide up the bottom of the screen to see the options and tap the minus sign in red next to the stop you want to remove. Your directions then update automatically to recalculate your route as needed.
When you’re planning a lengthy drive to a location using Maps, keep in mind that you can add multiple stops along the way. Whether you add them during the route planning or need a pit stop before your final destination, this is one of the handiest new features introduced with Apple Maps in iOS 16.
