beach ball, snow leopard

I think it is since upgrading to snow leopard that the spinning beach ball comes on all the time. It is as if my macbook has lost the ability to do more than one thing at a time. For example, when sending a large email, i can not even type something while it is being uploaded. Frequently while typing an email everything stops for a few seconds, and then afterwards all the letters appear.
