So earlier this week, I noticed my macbook had a chip in it on the keyboard casing (if you can imagine this) above the light (the "on" light). I scheduled an appointment at the genius bar at my nearest Apple store and took it in.

Immediately they said they would fix it. Research prior to taking it in indicates this is a flaw in the laptop from the top case (or "lid") closing to hard on that spot. If you notice, there are notches on either side of the underside of the lid and that is where the chipping happened.

The appointment was at 3:30 Saturday. They said it might take a few hours but would have it done by closing time for sure. Honestly, I was not in a real hurry to get it back as long as they were fixing it. Since I was thinking it wouldn't be done until 6 or so, I went home (40 miles) and would come back the next day.

I ran a few errands on the way home and got home by 4:50. As soon as I got in the door, my wife told me she got a call that they were already done. Sweet. I picked it up today all repaired. They had to replace all the keys and trackpad and button so that was a plus as my trackpad button was kind of weird (harsh clicking but was completely operational). It's like getting a new computer back.

I didn't have to rely on proving my AppleCare standing (I have it until next year I belive). They just took it as soon as he saw it. FREE REPAIR.

My research tells me that Apple originally denied repair claims on this issue in 2007 (I think) but eventually they did a 180 and agreed to fix the problem, even if it was out of warranty (assuming you don't bring in a macbook that looks like it's been through a running cement mixer).

Experience was very positive and was very happy. Although, if this is such an issue, what does it say about Apple quality?

By the way, while I was at the Apple store and I looked at the 27" iMac. Wow. Just wow.
